The numbers four and five as the foundation of all creation and corporeal man
In Egyptian numerology four is the pillars or foundation in which all of creation are formed from.
Shu, Tefnut, Geb, and Nut are part of the Grand Ennead and the four elementary properties of the Universe;
The Grand Ennead
Air; Fire; Earth; and Water. They are all inseparable and connected by their primary and secondary elements that combine in ways to produce effects like the stars moons, earth, physical bodies, thoughts, etc.
They are not meant to be taken literally. As alchemical elements they are metaphors.
Fire is the metaphor for desire
water is the metaphor for waves of potential and specifically symbolizes emotion in the physical.
Fire and Water are the two most elementary elements.
Air is the metaphor for the spirit
Earth is the metaphor for physical matter
Most do not understand the depth of the science behind these Neters and simply misinform people as to what they represent.
But here I will give a very short explanation that will give you a good working foundation on how they work in concert. And how they fit as numbers and the foundation of the universe.
The alchemical elements symbolized
Shu and Tefnut represent the polarization or dualization of the fire aspect of Atum. Fire (a metaphor for desire or passion) is the cause of EVERYTHING in the Universe. without the desire to manifest, nothing in the universe will be created. Rember that idea in law of attraction teachings? First you must know what you desire to manifest. It is ancient and was taught in the mystery schools.
Shu is the active aspect of fire and is dry.
Tefnut is the passive aspect of fire and is moist or wet.
But Shu and Tefnut are not just two simple components of fire. they have secondary components that were a part of Atum as water that also interacts with each other.
One of the reasons why you see the alchemical elements of Air, Earth, Fire, and Water represented as a triangle is that they have a secondary or dual-component that produces a phenomenon or effect. Any phenomenon that can be experienced has the components of a trinity of masculine, feminine, and child.
Shu's secondary aspect is the warmth of wet that produces the alchemical element of air (the phenomenon) or the more correct metaphor would be vapor, as what happens when you heat water. The result of this aspect of Shu would be the metaphor for the universal spirit that has descended further and closer to materialization.
Shu and Tefnut are the foundational elements for all of creation and are the manifested elements that were in potential within Atum. In other words, everything that is very possible was present at the beginning with Atum. That's why in ancient Egypt he would fit with our Christian idea of the alpha and the Omega; the beginning and the end.
You will also hear Shu being called the void (an aspect of his secret name)because of how he interacts with Tefnut as her functions develop. This is an aspect that can be perplexing if you are not aware of the numerology and/or you only know of Shu as the "god of air" that so many websites state. Shu's secret name rh (reh) is actually an aspect of the function of Set.
The "void" in the mythology is Shu separating Geb and Nut. You will see this depicted as Geb lying down sprawled out of the ground with Shu holding up Nut and keeping them both apart.
Tefnut's secondary aspect is the cold of wet that makes water or dew (moisture) when vapor condenses. But also has a quality of cold fire that contracts and makes the earth. Again, just as twin Shu is the manifested potential of Atum so is Tefnut. If you are mathematically inclined and want to fact check this concept then you want to delve more into the numerology aspects.
This is originally what the cross is about. It is the number four or 2 squared. It is again about the numbers. Too many that teach Khemetic Spirituality are not aware of the numbers as what the myths came out of.
Numbers are at the foundation of all Egyptian mythology
Every living thing is formed by the alternate action of the elements of fire and water. Shu and Tefnut are twins because they mirror each other as the manifested duality of Atum.
They are both interacting simultaneously and "crossing" each other. The concept of Crossing is a profound aspect of ancient Egyptian spiritual science.
A simplified explanation of the concept of Crossing is the idea that any phenomenon is a reactive effect. The first cross will annihilate or absorb the phenomenon. This is known as death. However, a reaction occurs on the second crossing that produces the phenomenon or gives "Life" to it. Mankind and material reality is the result of alchemical elements metaphysically crossing.
As mentioned in previous models the Neter for crossing is Nieth. She is the "virgin birth" spoken of biblically. Crossing is applicable chemically as it is metaphysically. It's as relevant to medicine and biology in ancient Egypt as it is in science.
You will see the idea of Crossing represented symbolically in many aspects of Egyptian art and customs. One of the most obvious representations is the crossing of wrists and scepters of a mummy.
Double crossing represented by the Neter Nieth
The Christian Cross is the same concept of crossing symbolized another way. Christ on the Cross is the symbolic representation of the metaphysical concept of the elements needed to produce physicality, of which physical man being pinned to the cross as the manifested phenomenon of an alchemical reaction.
When you look at the pyramids of Egypt you are looking at the symbolic representation of the four alchemical triangles of Fire, Air, Water, and Earth, with a square as its base representing the foundation of manifested reality and the protrusion of the pyramid to its point at the top as a phallic representative of the fire of desire to create.
The base is a square and the pyramid is four triangles of the alchemical elements
If you can imagine picking up a cross in the middle and lifting it up you will form a pyramid. This is where the number five come in. Man or corporeality is pinned to this foundational Cross. In other words, without the cross mankind and physicality could not exist. Another way to say this is it is Christ on the Cross.
For the ancient Egyptians, it wasn't a historical man on the cross, it was a metaphysical concept that represented an aspect in each and every one of us. The myth is about universal components. There are other components regarding the soul that also apply here. But it is too indepth for this particular unit on the numbers. It will be addressed in depth within another course. You will be amazed at how much Christianity spoke the same words philosophically but changed the intent and therefore the meaning of the original science.
The reason you see Shu and Tefnut symbolized as two lions is they are the masculine and feminine aspect of fire.
As stated before, Shu and Tefnut are mirroring twins.
They are the manifested potential of Nun or the hidden aspects of Amen that we can know through the effects that became Shu and Tefnut. They are still abstract but no longer unknown.
As Christians, we were taught to worship these ideas superstitiously but without ever knowing what the essence of these ideas. "Believing" and having "faith" has kept many in the darkness of ignorance and blind to the truth. It's time to come into the light. Or as the ancient Egyptians called it, coming forth by day.
So whenever the myth is addressing a cross, in some way it is referencing the number four or two squared.
The idea of Iusa (yay-oo-sa) is Yeshua or Jesus as the essence of corporeal existence that is pinned to the foundational element of existence.
This knowledge is truly a science when you dissect it.
